Staying well means finding balance in all areas of our lives, including our intellectual side. Reading does more than expand our perspectives and knowledge. It also helps to keep our brains healthy! Some research suggests that reading can even prevent dementia.

We've teamed up with the amazing folks at the Huntsville Public Library to share some titles that you may enjoy over these winter months.

Our first recommended reads are:

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles
From bestselling author Amor Towles, this novel will be a true delight for any fan of fiction. It has a little bit of everything from politics and espionage, to romance and poetry. Count Alexander Rostov may be a fictional character, but the places and events that surround him are vivid and based on truth. Rostov is placed on house arrest in the Metropol Hotel, across the street from the Kremlin, for being an unrepentant aristocrat. At first glance, he feels his life is doomed, but as we progress through the novel he begins to find his true purpose among an elegant cast of characters. Towles captures your attention from the beginning, and this is one novel you won’t want to put down.

Mostly Plants by the Pollan Family
As we say goodbye to another year and begin making plans for the new one ahead, we often reflect about our food choices. NY Times bestselling cookbook Mostly Plants will help you to try something new this year. There is some evidence that has shown a plant based diet can help prevent illness, improve memory and better your mood. Plant based eating has become a popular lifestyle choice and this cookbook was one of our most checked-out items of 2020. It’s a great introduction to plant based eating for beginners. It encourages everything in moderation, also known as a flexitarian diet. So if you’re not quite ready to ditch meat full time, this is a great alternative to help you add a few more plants to your plate and make healthier food choices.

Squeeze Me by Carl Hiaasen
If you’re looking for a light read full of savage humor, look no further than Carl Hiaasen’s newest book Squeeze Me. When the current political landscape might have you shaking your head, Hiaasen steps in with a cast of eccentric characters and unbelievable situations that are just too bizarre to be real. Set in Palm Beach Florida, the US President’s neighbor is eaten by a python, or is she? Full of his trademark humour and filled with his particular brand of satirical social commentary, you might just be wondering how close to reality this book actually is. Hiaasen weaves a ridiculous adventure so peculiar that it’s best to just sit back and enjoy the ride.

Enjoy!
